SUMMARY: Pinal County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff Serdy is an extremist and conspiracy theorist with connections to the Oath Keepers. While speaking at a 2nd Amendment rally, Serdy publicly said, “I personally am a member of the Oath Keepers.” Serdy also appeared among Arizonans that “had signed up as members of the Oath Keepers,” which he later downplayed, saying “any elected person is an oath keeper.''
Serdy has ties to other extremist movements. On his personal Facebook, Serdy posted a photo of a Proud Boys challenge coin, which suggested January 6th insurrectionists were political prisoners. Serdy’s personal Facebook page includes Covid-19 and chemtrail conspiracy posts.
Serdy has supported and attended events with Sheriff Mark Lamb, who is also an election denier. On his personal Facebook page, Serdy likes extremist pages such as Breitbart and One America News Network pages. At a 2nd Amendment rally in 2023, Serdy told a story about townspeople with guns taking over a city after a rigged election and compared it to the January 6 insurrection.
After the 2020 election, Serdy also supported an audit of Maricopa County, which was confirmed to have “no evidence of fraud.” In a public statement video on his Facebook, Serdy criticized the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors for resisting the state Senate-initiated audit, saying “let the audit happen, what are you hiding?” On his personal Facebook page, Serdy is friends with fake electors Kelli Ward, Anthony Kern, Tyler Bowyer, and Nancy Cottle. Serdy has also shared a meme embracing civil war as well as “Trump won” and “the rules have changed” flags.
In 2022, Pinal County had a series of election issues, including precincts running out of ballots in the primary and a 500-vote discrepancy in the general election, which Serdy used to claim that he “can’t accept” the results. In 2022, Serdy joined Sheriff Mark Lamb, County Attorney Kent Volkmer, and Supervisor Mike Goodman in a public announcement of Pinal County ballot issues. Democrats blamed the election issues on chronic underfunding of counties and election administration, while a Republican Pinal County attorney said the county “didn't order enough ballots" and Serdy used the problems to stir mistrust in elections.
Meanwhile, Serdy backed election deniers Kari Lake and Finchem in 2022 on his personal Facebook page.
In the lead up to the 2024 election, Serdy has floated not certifying the 2024 election, noting that the authority to change the board of supervisors’ responsibilities lies with the state legislature. Serdy supported a trial hand-count of ballots to “see how it would go” after “months of requests from residents who want the county to hand-count ballots.” In July 2023, the Pinal County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to task the county recorder with overseeing elections.
